DC vs Marvel

Why I think both universes deserve to be loved, not ranked.

In a world full of DC vs Marvel, I think it’s amazing to be one of the few people that recognize both as their own amazing worlds, nay universes. I don’t think that DC and Marvel should be opposing universes, or that they are. Instead, we are going to highlight all of the great stuff about both, and just appreciate that some people had imagination, creativity and talent to make such great pieces of, frankly, art!

This all being said, I am not at all an expert in any of these two superhero universes, but someone who very much enjoys them. I am not a big dork who will be able to tell you all of the plotlines, or even all the characters names, I haven’t watched all the movies or series, and I’m sorry to say, I’ve never read a comic from either of these franchises. This means I’ve missed out on a lot, so I won’t claim to know a lot about either, but I have spent some time loving both so I would like to give my opinion on this decades old rivalry.

Starting with DC. When I was a kid, I used to adore DC, I couldn’t get enough of it. Wonder Woman was especially was my favorite, because she was such a girlboss. I think in that time, if you asked me, “DC or Marvel?”, I would have said DC with no hesitation and then chewed you out for even considering Marvel as an option. I think DC has got that “iconicness” feel to it. You ask a kid, a few years back, what they want to be when they grow up, or which superhero is the best, they say Superman, or Batman, Wonder Woman, the occasional Flash showed up. It has the vibe, the pure superhero vibe, with the action, with the fame, the absolute larger than life, powerful feel. That is what DC brings. Then we talk about its mainstream movies and series. There were some very powerful movies and series that came out, “Wonder Woman”, “Superman”, “Smallville”, “Arrow (+ Arrowverse)”, “Joker”, “The Batman”, “The Dark Knight”, “The Dark Knight Rises”, “Batman Begins” etc. (DC really loves its Batverse) Although, these are some of the 100+ live actions, and the rest… didn’t perform that well. Meanwhile there are over 160 animated movies and series, and more than half of these are hugely successful hits. Fact of the matter is, the animated movies and series of DC are just better than the live-actions, no doubt about it. They’re better made, they don’t just have the kaboom and “I have childhood trauma so I’m going to be dark and edgy for the rest of my life and make everything dark and edgy too.”

DC has always had a problem with the consistency and cooperation of its universe.
